Arresting Development

Prevented from discussing incident, police officers rely on their lawyers

When a law firm in the western United States chose to proactively defend their clients, suspended police officers, Powers MediaWorks LLC was engaged to provide strategic communications counsel.

Prohibited by their police department from responding to news media inquiries about a highly publicized incident, the officers initially stayed silent while newspaper editorialists and citizen commentators speculated about the incident and criticized the officers.

While official and independent investigations continued, the officers’ attorneys began defending and publicly speaking for them in news interviews and on opinion pages. Through their attorneys, the officers wanted to ensure that supporters in their community and around the nation were recognized and updated on developments.

After investigators obtained numerous witness statements and carefully reviewed the evidence, no charges were filed against the officers.
