Assisting an international non-profit organization

Directors of a U.S.-based charitable foundation envisioned a series of projects to promote wildlife management and tourism through educational initiatives at the community level in southern Africa. The foundation's first project began in the Zambezi River - Kavira Forest area in north-western Zimbabwe.

The project area, a combat zone during the civil war that ended in 1980, has never fully recovered from extensive destruction of habitat, deforestation and the resulting loss of wildlife. A landmine field left active after the war remains within the project area.

In Zimbabwe with an Africa-based director of the foundation, we documented and photographed the project area and observed meetings with local communal leaders and government officials.

Upon our return, we developed a comprehensive report that was used for the foundation's fundraising activities and in grant applications. We also provided design services and created a logo for the foundation whose materials were later featured in a major U.S. newspaper.

The foundation developed plans to provide scholarships to students in forestry and wildlife management at the University of Zimbabwe and other institutions, and intends to pursue educational initiatives in Europe and the United States. (Recent political instability in Zimbabwe has forced the foundation to suspend activities there.)
