Explaining a public official’s controversial guilty plea
For more than a year, a former public official under investigation and then indictment remained silent as news coverage covered his professional and personal collapse.
Powers MediaWorks LLC was retained by the former official’s legal team as they negotiated what would be a controversial plea agreement and planned for his sentencing hearing.
The former official’s lawyers concluded that he probably would have one chance for an effective public statement before beginning his sentence. They also hoped to clarify after the sentencing hearing that the court had cleared the former official of false allegations that were repeatedly published in news coverage. Most importantly, the former official sought an appropriate public forum to apologize for his indisputable misconduct.
As the sentencing hearing approached, we advised the former official, his legal team and his family and prepared them for interaction with the news media. We also negotiated an exclusive newspaper interview and an agreement to publish letters to the editor from the former official and one of his attorneys.
