A fight over Texas HMO law goes to U.S. Supreme Court
Nine weeks before appearing before the U.S. Supreme Court, partners at a Texas law firm wanted to make the most of their extraordinary opportunity. With the firm’s briefs on file and argument preparations nearly complete, attention turned to the impending news coverage and the protection of their clients.
Because the law firm's opponents in the case included corporate and political organizations with extraordinary resources, a public defense of the Texas Health Care Liability Act required a focused, effective effort by the firm, and its supporters and third-party allies.
Powers MediaWorks LLC developed and implemented a strategic communications plan with the law firm's primary objectives in mind. We:
- developed and communicated key messages consistent with the underlying legal strategy and
- defined the public debate of the legal and policy issues;
- prepared clients for news media interaction;
- coordinated with state and Congressional leadership and third-party allies on pre- and post-argument position papers, statements and news releases and on a post-argument news conference at the Supreme Court; and
- accommodated news media covering the case
With support from Congressional leaders, the Texas Attorney General's office, the American Medical Association, AARP, and Families USA, among others, the law firm and their clients fared very well in hundreds of broadcast and print news reports before and after the Supreme Court arguments and decision.
