A President’s Exit

Leaving one of the nation’s largest universities with respect

A prominent university president was committed to a quick and constructive resolution of a resignation decision.

The president faced a challenging communications environment because of competing political interests on campus and in state government – and intense reaction from affected faculty, staff, current and former students, and friends of the university.

As the president’s legal advisers negotiated a transition agreement with university and state officials, they retained Powers MediaWorks LLC to advise the president on strategic communications issues. The president wanted to ensure that the public record of the resignation was accurate and that key university audiences were reached.

With effective timing of a statement, the president controlled the news cycle for nearly 24 hours before official announcements of the resignation. The president’s perspective was widely covered in state and national news coverage.
